The Meriden Kids Walk Safe(MKWS) program is a community based, child pedestrian, educational, injury prevention, safety project designed to make walking & bicycling to school healthy, safe and routine.
MKWS promotes healthy lifestyles in children with goals to reduce childhood obesity.
In childhood obesity, 45% of our nation's school age children are at risk of becoming insulin-dependent.
MKWS educational outreach strategies are geared toward Meriden children Kindergarten - Middle school.
Meriden Kids Walk Safe- Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program is based on the federal program design.
Reminder: Warm weather provides an opportunity to promote physical activity by encouraging students to walk and bike to school
*Parents, youth, school staff & community are key participants in educating children about bicycle helmet usage ,safe routes and safe pedestrian habits year-round!
